RALEIGH, N.C. -- A Cary woman broke her leg Sunday following the emergency landing of an American Airlines flight at Raleigh-Durham International Airport, officials said.

Shortly after its 11 a.m. takeoff from RDU, a strong odor of burning oil filled the cabin of Flight 4650, which was scheduled to fly to Newark, N.J., officials said. As the odor continued, the pilot turned around and made an emergency landing at RDU at about 11:45 a.m.

The 29 passengers and three crew members were evacuated from the regional jet upon landing, and Barbara Welsh, of Cary, landed wrong as she jumped from the plane and broke her leg, officials said. She was transported to the hospital for surgery.

No other injuries were reported, and passengers were rerouted to other flights.

The aircraft has been taken out of service for repair and inspection, officials said.
