NOTIFICATION OF A CAA AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE

Please be advised that the Civil Aviation Authority has classified compliance with the following action as mandatory for aircraft on the United Kingdom Civil Register.

CAA Airworthiness Directive     003-10-2002

Applicability     British Aerospace BAe 146-100, -200 and -300 Series aircraft.

Subject - Description   Air Conditioning – To inspect air conditioning sound-attenuating ducts for signs of oil contamination.

Compliance - Requirement (Summary)     Compliance is initially required with BAE Systems (Operations) Service Bulletin ISB.21-156 at the next “A” check or within a maximum of 500 flights from 30 November 2002 and repeated at every subsequent “C” check.  The Service Bulletin requires an inspection of the inside of each of the four air conditioning sound-attenuating ducts for the presence of oil contamination.  This action is required because incidents have been reported involving impaired performance of the flight crew.  At this time, there is no substantiated evidence indicating that oil breakdown products can impair crew performance, however, whilst investigations are carried out, oil leaks and cabin/flight deck odours must be regarded as a potential threat to flight safety.
